SAINT PAUL, MINNESOTA

St Paul is the county seat and the capital of Minnesota, first settled by Pierre Parrant in 1838, received its name from a little Catholic chapel built in 1841 under the direction of Father Lucian Galtier, who in the preceding year had come to Mendota, near Fort Snelling. Saint Paul, abbreviated St. Paul, is the second-most populous city in the U.S. state of Minnesota. The city lies mostly on the north bank of the Mississippi River, downstream of the river's confluence with the Minnesota River, and adjoins Minneapolis, the state's largest city. Known as the "Twin Cities", these two cities form the core of Minneapolis-Saint Paul, the sixteenth largest metropolitan area in the United States, with about 3.69 million residents.

NAFIC's 2022 Charity is The Zach Sobiech Osteosarcoma Fund, which is part of the Children’s Cancer Research Fund.

Osteosarcoma is the most common bone cancer. It tends to occur in teenagers where it usually starts as osteoblasts, which are a type of bone cell that becomes new bone tissue.  Children and teens who endure osteosarcoma have low survival rates and the treatment may cause secondary cancers, learning and memory problems, infertility, organ complications and more.

In 2009, Zach Sobiech, from Lakeland, Minnesota, was diagnosed with osteosarcoma at 14 years old and by 2013 he had passed away. During his last year he decided to write a series of songs to say goodbye to friends and family. The most famous of which is “Clouds” which hit #1 on iTunes and went viral touching the hearts of people all over the world. In 2020, Disney released “Clouds” the movie which told the story of Zach's final years.

We are fortunate to have Zach’s mom, Laura Sobiech, speak at the convention this September. She'll tell us about Zach and the many lives his story touched. If you are interested in learning more, Laura's book, Clouds: A Memoir, details her family’s experience during Zach’s battle.

Treatments for osteosarcoma haven’t improved in decades. 100% of all donations to the Zach Sobiech Osteosarcoma fund go to research for better treatments for this deadly cancer.
